Youmail – A Better Voicemail Alternative – Formerly Hacking Voicemail

One of the greatest features with Vonage is when I get a voicemail, it will package it up in a nice little wave file and email it to me. That email is synced to my phone so I know withing about 15 minutes of receiving a voicemail and can check it by playing the attached file.
I like the ability to choose which voicemail I listen to and when, and quite frankly if the Iphone can do it… why not my ‘lesser’ Windows Mobile Phone.
Enter Youmail. Youmail allows me to receive messages via email, or through the site. I can setup my contacts so I have the picture posted next to the message, I can forward messages easily, I don’t have to listen to them in order, I can even setup custom voicemails for individual callers or groups. Oh and did I mention it’s free?
I would highly recommend checking it out, the initial setup was all of 5 minutes, to setup my groups I simply exported my contacts from Google and into Youmail. This is optional or you could manually enter your contacts in. You could also enter them as you go along, so there is no need to set this up right away. Once you have groups, then it’s easy to set specific voicemails by group. For example, if you hangout with a bunch of jokesters, you can RickRoll them whenever they call. Have a shady bill collector to duck? Set them up for ditchmail which will keep them from even getting through to your phone.
After testing this, I added one little hack. When someone calls and it sends an SMS, it mentions for a little extra fee I can recieve a link in the text to the message. What a great idea. I then added the number it texted me from into my contacts and entered m.youmail.com as the home page. This hack allows me to simply click on the contact name from the text which pulls up the contact info and from there, click on the site link. Nice! Now if only I didn’t have to manually enter all the contact pictures.
