Twitter Vs Facebook and Linked In Too

by Subachad on Jan.04, 2010, under Technology

I have been doing it wrong. Like others in my Twitter list, I too am guilty of p0sting updates which are then automatically updated to my Facebook. What’s the point? Why would someone follow me on Twitter if they are a friend on Facebook? Linkedin, I’m comfortable with my use of. Here is my take on each of these popular Social Media tools and how I will use them going forward.

Facebook - Strictly social. If someone is a friend on Facebook, they might not want to hear every single blog update. Subjecting them to the latest change on one of my rides or an install will eventually be viewed as spam and quite frankly I wouldn’t want someone doing that to me. All that said I’ll be keeping updates regarding my life here albeit this maybe a filtered view as once something is online, it’s for the world to see and will not ever go away.

Twitter - Twitter does have purpose. The key is in it’s definition. I am choosing to use Twitter as my outlet for site updates. Not everyone understands RSS feeds, but a lot of people understand Twitter. If you like this blog and you would like to know whenever updates are made, you can do so using Twitter or by subscribing through RSS. I have already dropped one friend from Twitter for their constant Tweets and will likely drop another. Constant tweets create so much noise that I miss any actual “meat” that might I might otherwise be interested.

LinkedIn - With Facebook and Twitter I was reluctant to also get on Linkedin. After a realization that with the tech industry constantly changing, job security an oxymoron and a desire to create myself as a brand, Linkedin gets my information out there for the tech world to see. It’s an ever changing online resume that is me. Keeping it updated is going to be the real issue. Every day I learn new things. Not just small things either, but significant things. Whether it’s today’s realization about these social media tools, the idea for my wife to create her own brand by creating YouTube videos demonstrating makeup techniques or the day I allotted 19 GB of memory to the Virtual servers even though the ESXi host machine only ha 16GB of actual RAM.

Writing this, made me think of a couple other online social media tools as well and how I should use them.

Picasa - This is Google’s image program. I use it to sort my photos, I can label them, tag them, rename them, even sync them to the web. Not to mention with the recent price drop allowing me to get 20GB of storage, this makes for a great online backup solution for my photos. I can also make any folder I like public which in turn gets more results if you search for Subachad or for any images that might be related to any of my installs or modifications. I should also point out that photos are usuallly uploaded within a couple of days, whereas posts relaying install information might not ever get posted.

Youtube - Picasa has a great feature which allows me to easily create picture slide shows set to music. While I have only created two of these so far, in my own opinion this should make it easier to browse through the photos of the installs. Photo descriptions are displayed on each image as it rolls through each. It’s possible that the music choice will not be appreciated by all, but there is a mute button available.

So that’s it, hope you enjoyed the post.
